gas-like smell — A strong gas-like smell has blanketed Germasogeia since midday on Monday, prompting an urgent investigation by local authorities. The Fire Service is actively working to pinpoint the source of the pervasive odour that has raised concerns among residents.
Deputy Mayor Christos Papamichael addressed the situation, noting that the smell is particularly potent across a broad area, extending from Christakis Kranou Street and surrounding roads to the entire coastal front. He reassured the public that the Fire Service is diligently checking various vehicles, although initial examinations suggest that a gas leak is not the likely cause.
The investigation has led officials to consider alternative sources, including the possibility that the smell may be emanating from a ship in the vicinity. The Cyprus Ports Authority has been notified as part of the collaborative effort to resolve the situation.
In a social media update, Papamichael expressed gratitude for the public’s patience as authorities work to establish a clearer understanding of the issue. “The relevant services are already on the ground and checks are being carried out to locate the source of the problem. We ask the public to be patient until there is a clear picture and an official update from the relevant authorities,” he stated.
As the investigation unfolds, residents are being urged to remain vigilant and report any unusual occurrences related to the smell. The swift response from local officials underscores the importance of ensuring public safety in the face of this mysterious odour.
