Cat shootings: First Incident in Larnaca

In Larnaca, a cat was shot with an air gun in a quiet residential neighbourhood, an act condemned by the Movement as not only cruel but also reckless. They emphasised that discharging a weapon near homes jeopardises community safety and called for a comprehensive review of firearm possession regulations.

Disturbing Cases in Paphos

The situation escalated with two separate incidents in the Paphos district. On 16 February 2026, a cat was discovered shot and paralysed; X-rays confirmed a bullet lodged in its body, leading to the painful decision to euthanise the animal. In another case, another cat in Paphos was found with multiple pellets embedded in its body, signalling a troubling pattern of violence against these animals.

Concerns Over Police Response

The Movement of Ecologists has expressed disappointment with the initial police response to the Paphos incidents, describing it as inadequate given the severity of the cases. Following their outreach to the authorities, individuals who reported the incidents were scheduled to meet with officers at Paphos Central Police Station the next day. While the Movement welcomed this development, they maintained that the initial handling did not meet the gravity of the situation.

Call for Action and Accountability

In light of these incidents, the Movement has urged for thorough investigations that utilise all available scientific evidence. They emphasised the importance of enforcing existing animal welfare legislation and imposing appropriate penalties for those responsible for such acts of cruelty. The Movement warned that allowing impunity in these cases could lead to further violence, not just against animals but potentially against humans as well.

With the involvement of their Animal Action Team, which frequently addresses complaints like these, the Movement is committed to ensuring that these cases are treated with the seriousness they deserve. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to animal welfare, as the safety of both pets and residents hangs in the balance.
